Direction, Motivation, Courage is the working title of the inspirational autobiography of Olympian Darren M Chiacchia.
Darren's tremendous life-story has all the elements of a compelling book: poignant storytelling, passion, tragedy, transformation, courage, and hope.
From a young age, Darren Chiacchia was struck by the dream of achieving Olympic glory. The title of the book is based on his guiding mantra since age 10, when he scrawled these words all over his schoolbooks: ‘Darren M Chiacchia: Direction, Motivation, Courage.’ Beginning as a small town boy growing up in a middle class family Darren discovers his inner passion for horses and riding. At age 14, he sets a clear goal that many only dream of: to represent his country in the Olympic Games. From this day forward, Darren applies himself vigorously, with every ounce of diligence, grit, passion, and perseverance he can muster. He initiates a rigorous regimen, boldly forging opportunities in the equestrian world, and rising to the top. Through his efforts, Darrren excels at the sport, becoming a master Equestrian with unprecedented feats. Twenty years later, he accomplishes his childhood dream: competing in the 2004 Olympic Games.
More than an Olympic dream come true, this is a story of overcoming obstacles, breaking through boundaries, and actualizing human potential.
Interwoven with his Olympic story, are also Darren’s personal struggles and anecdotes, with life-wisdom stemming from his strong spiritual foundation. Tales as a unique, unicycle-riding kid who was very different from his peers, often feeling deep loneliness and solidarity; finding solace in caring for bunnies, squirrels, and other injured animals … A teen prevailing over bullying, coming to terms with, and finally, embracing his homosexuality… A young adult, going from ‘rags to riches,’ achieving a horse-business of unprecedented success… The journey of becoming a Master Competitor, specializing in dressage and show-jumping...Becoming A Master Trainer, having achieved most of his success with horses often rejected by other top riders; as well as a Master Coach to many exceptional students.
But the story does not end here...after achieving his ultimate goal, and excelling at his sport, while flourishing as a top Trainer and Coach, Darren experiences a grave wake-up call, a literal 'fall from grace,' that forever alters his destiny. This fall happens in the form of a treacherous riding accident, which puts him on the verge of death. He is ushered into a deep coma for many weeks. His prognosis is irreparable brain damage-- if he ever wakes up. During these weeks in a comatose-state, he undergoes a series of poignant and moving near-death-experiences, which transform his life upon waking.
After his fall, in the next 42 days, Darren slowly begins to regain consciousness, in stages. Darren again triumphs against the odds, experiencing a remarkable recovery which the doctors describe as, ‘nothing short of a miracle.’ Yet, his challenges are just beginning. Darren has yet to face the most courageous battles of his life. Challenges that summoned his deepest courage, in a way that had never been tested before. Upon fully waking, Darren’s life – as he knew it-- is over. He has only a vague idea of who he was. He is stripped of his identity and stature. Memories from the past are a blur. This man, once a living example of success, esteem, strength, and independence-- is now completely dependent on others for basic physical care. He is struck with extreme bouts of paranoia and sheer terror; frightening visions, and utter confusion. The fall from grace continues... As Darren slowly began to regain his physical and mental health and reclaim his identity, he comes up against nearly insurmountable obstacles, such as a dire health prognosis, and the demise of his business.
With his signature mantra of ‘Direction, Motivation, Courage’ Darren perseveres, rebuilding his life ‘one baby step at a time.’ Yet, now holding a deepened spiritual wisdom, and awareness of the preciousness of life. Putting his philosophies to the test, he continues to have the courage to believe, ‘Adversity is God smiling down on you.’ As the adage goes, like a Phoenix out of the ashes, from the depths of darkness, new life emerges. He is a living example of how challenges can be transformed into opportunities....and how sometimes the deepest darkness brings forth the brightest light.
The book will be written in first-person format by Darren, with co-writer Amy Gallagher offering editorial assistance.
Darren now uses his past challenges as fuel for greater life purpose. Following his accident, he achieves the remarkable feat of rising to the top again as an Equestrian, with his vision set on representing his country in international competitions. But he has done more than that. Not only has he returned to being a top competitor, he is also bringing more light to the relevant subject of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI is gaining increased awareness in our society, due to the number of athletes suffering from varying degrees of brain injury, coupled with the tremendous number of injured veterans returning from the war overseas. The book will address the traumatic impact on both TBI victims and their families. Darren brings forward an awareness of how the entire family suffers from this injury; and offers guidance through these challenges. Darren is becoming increasingly involved in programs of awareness, education, and support for victims of TBI, and their families.
Darren's teen years of discovering and embracing his homosexuality also address issues of gay awareness, and teen bullying- both extremely relevant issues today. Having lived his life as an openly gay man who also endured severe bullying as a teen, Darren's story will serve as a guide and inspiration.
Direction, Motivation, Courage will appeal to a variety of niches and individuals: anyone who has held an Olympic dream, or a dream of excelling in what they love. The book will be a source of inspiration and guidance to those driven to follow their life’s passion. The book will appeal to horse-lovers, or anyone who has known an intimate bond with an animal. Serious competitors of any sport. Entrepreneurs striving for success in doing what they love. Seekers interested in near-death accounts and spiritual principles. This book will speak to individuals in difficult circumstances, demonstrating that any challenge can be transformed into opportunity.
Overall, Direction, Motivation, Courage will appeal to anyone seeking greater meaning and purpose in their life.
