Dharmendra Deol played the romantic hero in woman centric films from 1960-1968 and became romantic hero from 1968-69 and played the role of action hero from 1975-1997 in A grade films. Dharmendra has appeared in 286 films which includes 157 multi star cast films and did only 85 solo hero films and 44 films not as lead hero but in guest appearance. Off these 157 multi star cast films - 101 were flops and had 56 hits. Off the 85 solo hero films - 44 were flops and 41 hits. Then from the 44 films where he had guest role only 10 were hits and rest 34 were flops. Dharmendra had a total of 179 flops from 1960-2013 and had 107 hits from 1960-2013. He is known as 'Garam' Dharam in Bollywood. Had the looks of a real gentle man, masculine body of a he-man and when it came to his films, he had a very humorous touch in his dialog-delivery and the timing. The heroics in his films - Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Jugnu (1973), Raja Jani (1972) and Loafer (1973) - are all quite remarkable and unforgettable. He got nominated for Filmfare best actor 4 times in his career though he couldn't get one but got "The Life Time Achievement" award in 1997 from Filmfare for his achievements, splendid performance during his times and wonderful career in Bollywood. His roles as the lead hero tended to get repetitive from the 1984 till 2002 as often he was seen as an drunkard action hero who is elder of a romantic younger brother in the multi star films.He accepted mostly B grade film from 1990-2003 as the lead hero and returned to A grade Hindi films in 2007 with hat-rick of hits as supporting actor in Life In Metro, Johnny Gaddaar and Apne.

On August 21, 1979 he converted to Islam, changed his name to Dilawar Khan, got married to actress Hema Malini, as his first wife, Prakash Kaur, could not be divorced either as she was mother his 4 children and he had fallen in love with Hema Malini only from 1975 whereas had married Prakash Kaur in 1954. In accordance with the Hindu Marriage Act it is illegal for a Hindu to get re-married when his first wife is still alive. Two Congress party-members have launched law-suits against him under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code in this connection as he failed to make a declaration of his religion when he joined the Janata Party.

Jhuta Sachch, a box-office flop, in 1984 was his 72nd solo hero film and offers for Dhamendra in solo hero films declined from 1984 as a result till 2013 he did only 85 solo hero films. Till 1975 Dharmendra was doing more solo-hero films and Sholay was only his 24th multi-hero film but due to failure of his solo hero films between 1975-81 and observing that his success as action hero in multi-star cast films between 1977-1979 , he accepted more multi-star cast films from 1980.

From 1976-1991 only Rajesh Khanna used to get more solo-hero projects as producers preferred to not to give solo hero projects to other stars. Solo hero films of actors like Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Amitabh, Shashi Kapoor and others kept failing regularly from 1976-1983 and thus these actors were signed more for multi-star films.

Till end of 1983, Dharmendra had done only 43 multi-star cast films and 71 solo hero films . From 1984 he accepted too many multi-star films of action genre such that by 2013, his multi-star cast film tally stands at 157 and solo hero films only at 85.

His career's another turning point was the year 1987, when he had 11 releases of which 7 were hits. He however could not break record set by Rajesh Khanna in 1985 - where Khanna also had 11 releases in a single year but managed to have 8 hits,.

He acquired the tag of He-Man in 1987 at the age was 52 - when of the 11 releases as the leading man in that year , 7 action films became successful namely multi-star films Watan Ke Rakhwale, Insaniyat Ke Dushman, Loha, Dadagiri, Aag Hi Aag, Mard Ki Zabaan and the solo hero film Hukumat.

In the year 1988,he had 9 releases but 6 flopped and 3 were hits and in 1989 all his 6 films flopped and 2 were hits. His most successful and longest collaboration was with director Arjun Hingorani from 1960-1991. Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere was debut film of Dharmendra as an actor and Arjun's first directorial venture with Dharmendra as the lead hero. They together worked in 4 hits - Kab? Kyoon? Aur Kahan?, Kahani Kismat Ki, Khel Khilari Ka , Katilon Ke Kaatil where Arjun was the producer and the director but their last film together Kaun Kare Kurbanie in 1991 flopped badly. Furthur Arjun produced 2 films where he was not the director but only the producer and Dharmendra was the hero - Sultanat and Karishma Kudrat Ka - both of which flopped.

His other successful association was with director Pramod Chakravarthy with whom all his 4 ventures were box-office success each belonging to different genre - drama in Naya Zamana, romance in Dream Girl, action in Azaad and Jugnu.
